What’s Next WV? Berkeley County Workshops

Grassroots Economic Development.

In 2015, James and Laurel planned and facilitated regular workshops and town hall meetings in Berkeley County WV. Part of a state-wide initiative from the Center for Civic Development, What’s Next WV? discussions aimed to generate ideas to improve prosperity and opportunity in communities across West Virginia.

Since we do not have a coal based economy, Berkeley County’s issues look very different from other parts of the state. H+W’s goal was to build upon an already growing economy, find ways to connect busy community organizations and spark ideas for others to plug into the emerging opportunities.

Since we are all about collaboration, we were very grateful to have partners like the Berkeley County Economic Development Authority, Catholic Charities, James Rumsey Technical Institute and The United Way of the Eastern Panhandle.

In addition to the creation of the Martinsburg Farmers Market, the discussion led to a new community calendar initiative, an active Facebook community, arts support, awareness of regional assets, and new partnerships between community organizations.
